Snowboard comes with built-in brake for novice riders

Snowboarding novices can now potentially bypass the pain and intimidation of their first descent down the bunny slope with a new board that comes equipped with a built-in brake.

The new Streetboardz Boarder Kontrol aims to give beginners a useful tool to gain some control when learning the sport: instant braking.

While stopping a snowboard isn't the sport's most challenging aspect, it takes time to develop the skill. To control the Boarder Kontrol, the rider holds a leash while descending and can pull up on it at any point to activate the rear-mounted brake, writes Gizmag.

Plus riders can use the brake to control their speed. The bonus is that the curve on the blade also allows the rider to carve and turn while slowing down, which can help build technique, adds Gizmag. Once you outgrow the brake, remove the leash and brake blade and ride the board as a standard snowboard.

The Australian company isn't focusing on becoming a retailer, however, but aims to supply schools and rental shops around the globe, offering varying sizes to accommodate children and adults. So far, Australian resort Thredbo has been testing the boards and is launching a line this upcoming winter. Meanwhile, Streetboardz is eyeing resorts in North America and Japan.
