Tanya Garcia 'lucky' in career, family life

Tanya Garcia

She was once one GMA-7's top stars, starring opposite some of the network’s top leading men during the early 2000s. But Tanya Garcia gave up all that to focus on her life as the better half of Mark Lapid.

Now, after seven years of being together (including two years of marriage) with the former actor-Pampanga governor, Tanya is still happy with how her career has turned out.

“May mga artista naman na merong focus at ito talaga yung gusto nilang ma-achieve. E ako naman, ever since from the start, hindi ko rin naman nakita na doon papunta, na pa-superstar,” she said during an interview at the set of “Paroa: Ang Kuwento ni Mariposa,” where she stars as Barbie Forteza’s mother.

Although she no longer gets top billing, Tanya considers herself lucky. Before “Paroa,” she starred in another GMA-7 afternoon soap, her second after she came out of her hiatus.

“At least may work. Ang dami nga na nawala, bumalik, tapos (walang work). Meron ding ang tagal na andiyan, hindi nawala, pero hindi nabibigyan,” she explained. “E ako, ang tagal kong nawala, pero nung sinabi ko na gusto ko ulit magtrabaho, meron agad.”

Mark doesn’t stop her from going full throttle on showbiz, she said; rather, it’s her choice to prioritize her family. Tanya and Mark have two daughters, Mischa Amidala and Matilda Anika.

“Si Mark naman talaga, hindi naman yan pumipigil. Supportive naman siya. But there are times then siyempre, lalo na pag hanggang umaga (ang taping), siyempre tatawag na yan,” she explained.

Tanya added: “Never naman niya sinabi na di ako pwede. Choice ko talaga na ayoko rin na tulad before kasi growing up yung dalawa.”

Give and take

It’s their respect for each other, Tanya said, that keeps their relationship strong despite the intrigues they faced years ago.

“Kami ni Mark, talagang magkaiba kami ng ugali. Pero talagang give and take,” she shared. “May times na kailangang tumahimik ka na lang, pakinggan mo.”

The Kapuso actress also revealed  they’re planning to have a church wedding—after they conceive a baby boy.

“Sana this year talaga may baby boy. Pinagpra-pray ko talaga,” she said.

They want to have a son so much, Tanya and Mark are even considering to undergo gender selection procedures. But they’re still weighing the pros and cons, as well as the moral repercussions of the process. What Tanya is sure of, however, is that they want a boy and they need to conceive as soon as possible.

“E kasi, 31 na ako. Paano kung girl na naman? Siyempre yung asawa ko, hindi naman titigil hangga’t di magka-boy,” she said. “Kahit di naman niya sabihin sayo, (alam mo).”

“Paano naman ang katawan ko? Piggy oink oink? Ang hirap magpapayat pag past 30 ka na! Malay mo, ako pala ang next Darna,” Tanya joked, noting that the rights to Darna is already with a rival network.
