Trevor Noah to take main 'Daily Show' role

'The Daily Show' contributor Trevor Noah will become the comedy news program's host as Jon Stewart departs.

The South African joined Comedy Central's regular news satire broadcast in December 2014 and will succeed Jon Stewart as presenter.

Stewart announced his planned departure on a February 10 episode of the show, and Noah had been one of several hot tips for the job.

"You don't hope to find the next Jon Stewart -- there is no next Jon Stewart. So, our goal was to find someone who brings something really exciting and new and different," Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless told the New York Times.

"He brings such a unique worldview and a deep understanding of human nature, which makes his comedy so insightful. He's truly a student of the world."

The decision to appoint Noah was taken by Ganeless, Viacom president Doug Herzog, and Comedy Central senior executive Kent Alterman, she said, with Stewart as their advisor throughout the process.
