Shu Qi of "The Assassin" is nominated for Best Actress at the Asian Film Awards

Set in 9th century China, the movie scooped a major award at this year's Cannes Film Festival

Due for release in China on August 27, "The Assassin" follows a woman's transformation from dumped lover to trained killer.

The film, directed by Hou Hsiao-Hsien, made a huge impression on the Cannes jury. Despite competition from against "The Son of Saul" and "Deepan" in the main competition, it scooped the best director award.

The film took 10 years to prepare and despite its historical accuracy and meticulous sets, was reportedly made for just $15 million.

Following its official premiere in China in August, the film is expected to hit European cinemas in January 2016. However, as of yet there is no US theatrical release date. Watch the teaser trailer, here.
