Worldwide box office: 'Lucy' still on top

In first place at the worldwide box office for the second consecutive week, Luc Besson's action movie earned $26.5 million over the weekend of September 14, Rentrak reports.

"Lucy," featuring Scarlett Johansson as a woman with an overdeveloped brain, now has cumulative revenues of over $354 million, including $9.6 million from theaters in Russia, where it opened this weekend.

The thriller "No Good Deed" with Idris Elba, which opened exclusively in the US this weekend, earned $24.5 million, claiming second place at the worldwide box office in spite of mitigated reviews.

Something of a 21st-century take on "Free Willy," the family drama "Dolphin Tale 2" claimed third place with global revenues of $17.8 million, including $16.5 million from US theaters. The sequel failed to live up to the first movie, which earned over $20 million during its first weekend in theaters in 2011.

"Guardians of the Galaxy" continued to draw crowds, grossing $17.3 million and bringing its cumulative revenues to $611 million. Fourth in the global ranking this week, the Marvel movie remains ahead of "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," which brought in $15.3 million. The disaster film "Into the Storm" landed in sixth place with $15 million, followed by the muscular action stars of "The Expendables 3" with $12.4 million.

Released in spring of this year in the US, "Divergent" rose in the box office ranking following its opening in China this weekend. The science fiction adventure movie is in ninth place with $10 million, just behind the American comedy "Sex Tape" with $11.5 million.

"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" concludes the top 10, grossing $9.89 million over the period.
