Acclaimed director Lav Diaz’s four-hour independent film, “Norte, Hangganan ng Kasaysayan” is the Philippines’ bet to the Best Foreign Language Film category in next year’s Oscar Awards.

“Norte,” a drama revolving around crime and family, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival and proclaimed Best Film at the Pancevo International Film Fest in Serbia. In 2013, Norte won Best Picture at the International Cinephile Society Awards and got the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award as well.

It got rave reviews when it was screened in film festivals around the world and was chosen for distribution in France, the US and the United Kingdom.

In the Philippines, Norte won four awards in this year’s Gawad Urian and earned Best Director honors for Diaz at the Cinemanila Internationnal Film Festival in 2013.

The film stars Sid Lucero, Angeli Bayani and others.

The producers of Norte have up to October 1 to submit certain requirements to the Oscars.

The Oscars’ Best Foreign Language Film award is given annually to a film produced outside the US that uses mostly non-English dialogue.
