Miss Earth 2014: Miss Austria Valerie Huber
What is your environmental advocacy and why did you choose this?
I grew up in Africa and had the great opportunity to go back there and do social work this summer. With a team of 10 volunteers from across the planet we went to 4 different primary schools each day to teach the children basic English and math skills. We also did beach and city clean-ups.
In addition to this, I got introduced to the project “Eco-Blocking,” a project I am very fond of and vowed to support. It aims to build plastic blocks to help make desks and chairs for schools with no available resources.
Furthermore, I want to support the Project of last year’s Miss Earth Austria. She travelled to the Philippines with Care Energy - a company that produces energy out of sunlight and solar panels. They hiked up a hill, through the jungle until they reached the little village.
People there lived without any kind of electricity. After a long day fixing the solar panels to the roofs of the people’s houses, the light bulbs started glowing! I think this is a great project and I would love to join them on their next journey to bringing electricity to those who have none.
What tip can you share to promote this year's theme, Eco Tourism?
Austria is the perfect destination for Eco Tourism due to the numerous little hotels that serve only organic, local products; and the beautiful mountains and lakes which provide perfect holiday activities like hiking and swimming.
We also have elaborate and affordable network of public transportation with minimum CO2 emission and a great variety of sustainable energy sources (water-, wind-, and solar energy) which can also be used for tourism. Furthermore, Austria provides safe and equitable employment opportunities and fair wages, which contributes significantly to inclusive and sustainable economic growth.
